Imagine your favorite collection from childhood.
Remember the way it just got bigger and bigger, until the work it took to organize
it overcame
the
urge to keep collecting? Imagine now that you have been adding to
that collection for almost six decades…that’s almost 60 years accumulating
your treasures! Welcome to the
Museum of Anthropology at UBC. This winter, the Museum is proud to showcase
several recent acquisitions
from the South Pacific, Nunavut, and the Northwest Coast of British Columbia.
From shields and clubs, to
Nunavut sculptures, to a Chilkat woven robe, there are many new treasures to
be found at the Museum of
Anthropology. And for the most dedicated history buffs, listen to rare archival
footage from the vaults of CBC
television, including interviews with artists and expert commentary on the
arts and culture of the Northwest
Coast, enjoying the Museum’s new VUEguide Multimedia Tour. Visit www.moa.ubc.ca
for details.
There is a tiny, hidden, winter gem on the Sunshine
Coast, glorious and beautiful swans! Travel by boat with
West Coast Wilderness Lodge, through the renowned tidal rapids “Skookumchuck
Narrows” and up through
the Sechelt inlet, through misted clouds that caress the water
and cling to cedars. The entrance of Tzoonie
narrows is a very small opening in the coastal mountains approximately
25 meters wide. At the end of the
narrow inlet is the mouth of the Tzoonie River, where swans
gather in a stunning winter scene ‘The Swans of
Tzoonie’. Visit www.wcwl.com for more information.
Perhaps you are the type of person
who has a family of ski bums. Not wanting to be a poor sport,
you found
yourself on the mountain with one ski heading down the black
diamond mogul run and your other ski heading
towards a cliff…let’s not even discuss the poles!
So you moved on to snowboarding (less equipment!) and ended
up holding up the chair lift line for almost an hour as they
tried to find you buried under a pile of people who
have landed on you as you tried to get off the lift. Now
there is a way to vacation with your family at no risk
to your health! Experience SNO-LIMO Mountain Ecotouring.
The SNO-LIMO is best described as your most
comfortable chair on skis, driven and controlled by a trained
chauffeur. The only requirement is your ability to
smile and enjoy the scenery. See www.sno-limo.com for details.
Experience a whole new meaning of “room service”!
Whistler’s Sundial Boutique Hotel is putting a scrumptious
spin on the phrase ‘eating in.’ Instead of going
to a restaurant for breakfast, lunch or dinner, Sundial guests
can
now opt to have a professional chef visit their hotel room
to prepare and serve a gourmet meal—and then
clean up afterward. Pair this with the Sundial’s in-suite
spa services and guests may find little reason to leave
their room. “We are the first and only hotel in Whistler
to offer fine dining in-suite,” says David Demers,
owner
and general manager. “It’s a natural fit for
the Sundial as our rooms are spacious with full size kitchens
and
extraordinary views. We may just offer the best seat in the
resort for a gourmet meal.” Visit www.sundialhotel.com for details.
Sure, your Aunt Rosie
might make a killer bundt cake, and perhaps your older sister
is always stealing the show
with her handmade quilts…now it’s your turn to impress
the family at Christmas. Learn to be a blacksmith! The
Burnaby Village Museum not only presents you with a true heritage
Christmas, they also offer blacksmithing
classes. What happens if you take a while to get the hang of
it? Well, at least it’s red hot, you can pound away
on it, and perhaps take up knitting next year! Visit www.city.burnaby.bc.ca for more information.
When the Chamber of Commerce
no longer had the resources to host the Annual Santa Claus Parade,
the
residents of Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows were very close to
losing their Christmas spirit. Thankfully, a group
of dedicated citizens stepped forward and not only revived the
parade, but expanded it into an entire Winter
Festival. Now we can enjoy the Santa Claus Parade, as well as
free pictures with Santa, free hot chocolate,
wandering musicians and carolers, and much more, all in the beautiful
surroundings of Memorial Peace Park,
located in the heart of downtown Maple Ridge. See www.mapleridge-pittmeadows.com for details.
